Two years ago, my son I started making these 8 1/2" monochromatic blocks from my scraps. As with many of my projects, these were set aside in favor of other projects... to be worked on from time to time over the last couple years. I finished it up in October just in time to send to my niece for her 2nd birthday. (I also finished her "baby" quilt.)

The project consists of twelve 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" scrappy slab blocks in monochromatic primary and secondary colors. I prioritized fabrics that had animals and other items, fussy cutting when possible.

I made each page by joining a piece of 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" batting with two blocks by stitching around three sides with blocks right side together. After turning the page right side out I topstitched around those edges, leaving open the edge that would go into the spine. I opted not to quilt the pages.

Then I machine stitched pages together two at a time, then combined those. Four pages (that's four layers of batting and 8 layers of fabric!) was the thickest my machine could handle so I hand sewed the two halves together.

 

I was just making it up as I went from there. I chose the last of my favorite rainbow print from Timeless Treasures for the front and back covers and finishing the spine. I opted for hand stitching and a little hot glue to cover the corners of the spine, then used a hand binding to cover the spine. This spine is a little more than 1/2" thick.

Scrap projects are full of memories. As I flip through this book, I am reminded of so many projects I've made.

Way back in July I started the Morewood Mystery Quilt with Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs. I have participated in her mystery quilts in the past and love the pace of the instructions. I've mostly kept up with the monthly schedule.

I decided on this blue, white, and silver Hanukkah palette, choosing the royal blue print as my background. I initially planned for both white and silver prints to be combined for position in the quilt, but was able to cut all the pieces from the dots.

My 30 petal units are done from November's instructions.

These little 4-patch units are from October.

These are my HSTs from September. I still need to finish 30 HSTs from November... then I can get started on December's instructions (which start with more HSTs). :-)

We are four weeks into Quilting the Countdown 100 day project. There are 71 days left until QuiltCon. I'm spending at least 15 minutes a day working on my Patchwork City blocks.

I finished 4 blocks this week, bringing me to 38 out of 75 blocks complete, which tips me past halfway for block construction! The finished blocks shown feature Kona Clover and Punch.

I've cut the next six blocks featuring Kona Coral and Kona Bluegrass. I like to keep all my pieces in the book since I'll be sewing them up ASAP and not taking them anywhere.

After cutting out all my pieces, I also folded this pile of fabric to get reorganized.

Starting tomorrow I get to sew sew sew to get these blocks together! Only one of the blocks has fiddly template pieces, so I hope to get all 6 blocks finished this week.
