Welcome to my stop on The Great Outdoors Blog Hop. This hop features projects made from the Island Batik Ambassadors with all of Island Batik's newest fabric lines. My super secret fabric bundle that's been burning a hole in my stash since February is Petting Zoo, a vibrant and colorful line full of animals and animal prints. I chose to feature the rainbow of prints in my Floating Hexagons pattern (coming very soon! -- be sure to sign up for my newsletter so you don't miss the announcement). The pattern is in three size, and this is the lap size, finishing at approximately 45" x 63". Jungle Animals in Grape Juice is my background fabric. The backing is Jungle Animals in Snowcone with Giraffe in Cheddar. All of my piecing and quilting were done with 50wt Aurifil thread. I quilted the purple background with a loopy meander. I began by auditioning three Aurifil purples. I do this by laying the thread across the fabric. If possible, I try to mimic the pattern and density of the quilting I am planning. This technique is also helpful in considering different weight threads. I settled on Medium Purple (#2545) -- the middle one. I wanted the hexagons quilted in colors that blended with each fabric and the quilting motif to contrast the loopy meander in the background. I used my phone to sketch some options for the hexagons. Here are a few I considered. I chose the star and used my hera marker to mark the horizontal and vertical center of the hexagon to gently guide my quilting. I used quite a variety of colors in my quilting: Aurifil Desert Dawn Variegated (#4648), Yellow (#2135), Forest Green (#4026), Medium Delft Blue (#2783), Spring Green (#1231), Green (#2870), Turquoise (#2810), Dark Violet (#2582), Red (#2250), Medium Blue (#2735), Baby Pink (#2423), and Burnt Orange (#1133). Today is my stop on the Stash Statement Book Tour! I'm excited to be participating. I've long enjoyed Kelly's quilts on her blog and am thrilled to be helping to celebrate her first book! The book is filled with patterns to utilize your scraps with a little extra fabric. Kelly begins by walking you through her technique for creating a panel or chunk of fabric pieced from your scraps. From there, she has twelve patterns to utilize those panels.

I chose Beach Retreat, which you can find on page 26 of the book. The pattern is designed to use two colors of scraps.

If you've seen my work, you know I like bold, saturated color. I chose green first, but culled my green scrap pile to eliminate the limey yellow-greens. (I shared the beginnings of my green panels in a previous post.) Then I considered what to pair with green, and in a choice outside of the norm for me, I went with orange. I had some orange scraps (most notably from my Midnight Mystery quilt), but ended up gathering a few extras from my friend Mel. She brought me some great green scraps as well that made it into the project. Once my scrappy panels were done I chose the solid yellow and a black on white print.

I went with a simple large scale meander for the quilting. This motif allowed me to easily avoid the thick intersections of seams in some places. One of my favorite scraps in this project is the green mushroom print, leftover from pants I made for my son.

My binding is from my stash. I love stripes on a binding. This is the fourth green binding in a row that I've made. The first went onto Emerald Swallowtail which I finished last week and the other two are queued up for a charity quilt and for my Color Wash Mini quilt. I had nearly enough of this wild bicycle print for the quilt back. I added solid black to two sides of it.

I've gotten a bit lazy with quilt labels lately, but since I was making a quilt from Kelly's book, I thought it would be great to use her label technique, too! I found a scrap of my scrappy panel that had a solid section light enough to write on and trimmed it down to be my label. I had to write kind of small to squeeze it all in. My quilt, Citrus Beach Retreat, finishes at about 44" x 55". This is a smaller version than the 55" x 66" version in the book. Liz also made a Beach Retreat quilt for the blog hop, and Kelly is sharing a rainbow version. You can see the full lineup of the blog hop on my previous post.

Some finishes are a long time coming. I participated in Cheryl's 2015-2016 Midnight Mystery Quilt and had a finished quilt top in March 2016 at the end of the the quilt along. My projects without deadlines often get stuck at this stage. In April 2017 I had it quilted, then it sat folded up in a pile... with the binding all made and ready to attach. Projects with deadlines, including challenges and patterns, took priority. Well... I finally attended my first sew day with Bay Area Modern last Saturday and brought my mystery quilt along. It was a rocky start with frustration and seam ripping, but I managed to get the binding on that day.

A little recap on my project. The mystery called for four fabrics and in order to pull my fabric entirely from my stash I chose for each of those colors to be scrappy. Orange and pink were chosen because at the time they were the most plentiful (and least used) colors in my stash. I chose the blue and light grey to round out the palette.

Tami quilted it with the Modern Curves panto. I asked her to load the quilt sideways so the waves would be vertical on my quilt.

The quilt is backed in Tula Pink Mini Owl in Pacific, one of the prints I used on the front. It's bound in Kona orange... except for one section of the right edge which used one of the orange prints from the quilt top.

I'm so glad to finally have it finished and am thrilled to add it to the pile of quilts that my family enjoys. It's sure to be used to make a fort in no time!
