It's once again time to reassess the project list. I have already finished three quilts this month and I'm excited to get working on some others. Q1 is full of Project QUILTING challenge plans, and I have some Planned Improv: All About Angles projects in progress, but I'm hoping to also get back to some of my older WIPs in the coming months. This quarter will also see me moving back into my newly renovated sewing room. Most excitingly, I have some awesome new lighting. :-) And in February and March I'll be making some updates to my blog/website.

Here are the four Q4 finishes from my list:

I realized that I miscounted my 2018 finishes last week since i didn't get my class samples onto the blog. I finished 34 quilts last year (including two pillows) and 3 finished bags this year.

This is the beginning of week two of a month of posts by Island Batik Ambassadors featuring all of the newest collections of fabric. Today I'm sharing what I made with my bundle of Fortune Teller fabric. Way back in July I was so excited to open this beautiful rainbow of fabric.

My quilt features all 20 fabrics from the collection and is 80" x 96"! I think that makes it one of the three largest quilts I've made. I optimized for using all I had of the twelve fabrics that make up the center of the quilt and didn't really think about just how big it was going to be, how much binding that would take, or how hard it would be to hold up.

I just love the bold colors and couldn't resist making a rainbow. The triangles features all the multicolor prints from the collection.

The other part of my optimization was that I had a queen sized Hobbs Heirloom cotton batting. Thank you, Hobbs!

Once it was pieced, I visited a local quilt shop to longarm quilt it myself. I chose a motif that would offer great texture without being too dense. I like that this one is quilted in rows, but that each row kind of nests with the row above it.

 

I used my machine binding technique to attach the nearly 30 feet of binding. The binding is Rice. I like that the color reminds me of clouds... fitting for a rainbow quilt.

I love how happy the color is and how great it looks on the red couch. I look forward to curling up with the quilt, and seeing it enjoyed by my family. It will be the biggest quilt in the fort building pile. :-)

Last Sunday was the beginning of season 10 of Project QUILTING, a series of one-week quilt challenges. I've participated for the past two years and this year I'm a sponsor. The theme for this week's challenge is Hope Springs Eternal. Well... I was out of town for the first 4 days of the one week challenge, and then I had to spend Thursday and Friday making serious progress on a quilt deadline that I'll be posting on my blog tonight. This means I didn't even have time to think too much about this challenge until yesterday.

I had a hard time with this theme. In the end, with 14 hours until the deadline (including overnight... and I needed to sleep) I had hope I could crank out a small quilt. How's that for hope springing eternal? My initial goal was a mug rug, then I decided on placemat sized, and in the end I trimmed it to 18.5" x 18.5". I'll be linking up with less than 15 minutes to spare.

I used a lovely piece of hand dyed fabric from my friend Mel Beach and my Planned Improv: All About Angles technique. After demoing my technique on Wednesday (7 times!) I'm excited to work on some All About Angles projects.

I used two sizes of Aurifil Light Leaf Green (#1147) for this quilt. It was pieced and bound with Aurifil 50wt and quilted with Auriful 80wt. I hadn't used 80wt and really love the fine line it creates. It's certainly quilting that's all about the texture and not the color. I chose a fast motif from my recent class with Christa Watson. It's way fancier than a basic meander, but not much more difficult.

Here's the basic breakdown of how I made the quilt start to finish in under 14 hours.

Saturday
8pm - pull fabric
8:50pm - cut fabric
9:07pm - start sewing
10:50pm - bedtime

Sunday
5:45am - back at the machine
6:20am - finished quilt top 
7am - quilting begins
7:45am - done quilting
8:40 - binding going on
9:25am - photos, then blog post
9:48am - linkup
