I am so pleased to share that a recent project I worked on is available to order now. As a member of the Northern California/Northern Nevada SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) Region, I had the pleasure of working with Deb Cashatt to create the 134 page catalog for the region's newest exhibition, Prism Play.

Each of the 62 quilts is featured in the catalog with a full quilt image and a detail image with artist information and artist statement. While I don't have a quilt in this exhibition (I submitted Connections), I was excited to dust off my graphic design skills to do the layout and design of the book. Deb was an amazing partner on the project. She did all the photo editing and provided thoughtful feedback along the way.

Prism Play, an exhibition of 62 monochromatic art quilts, is currently on display at the Peninsula Museum of Art at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California. This inaugural exhibit runs through July 17, 2022. More venues will follow as this exhibition travels through 2026. Check the N.CA/N.NV website for updates on where it will be exhibited next.

Thanks for joining me for TGIFF. I am happy to finally be sharing my MQG mini swap quilt that I made for Margaret.

I started with some improv piecing including some wonky flying geese, ending in a minimalist, geometric pieced quilt top. Then I went to town with free motion quilting. I really enjoy trying a variety of free motion motifs on small projects, where the commitment is much smaller that if I am working on a large quilt.

My process for free motion quilting this piece was very organic, choosing each motif as I went. I had no overall plan except that I wanted the quilting to be a feature. I started with one of my favorites, a jagged stipple. I used Aurifil 50wt Light Turquoise (#5006), Turquoise (#2810), and Dark Turquoise (#4182) to coordinate with my three fabrics.

This quilt finished at 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" and is machine bound.

In June 2021, Ellyn and I started the Quilts Unscripted Bee. Currently we have 11 improv quilters and each month we create 2-3 improv blocks for one quilter. I've been so excited to see finished quilts and quilt tops in recent months that I wanted to share them with you. My beemates have shared their photos with me. Enjoy!

 

You may have seen Sarah Ruiz's Unscripted quilt that was awarded first place at QuiltCon 2022. She gave us a color palette and asked us to each choose letters so she would end up with an alphabet of blocks in a variety of improv styles.

 

Chris Davies chose the vibrant blue and yellow palette for summer blocks. I made the book and the (not a banana) hammock.

 

Chris Simon invited us to play with improv line in our choice of color.

 

Elizabeth Ray was inspired to have us create these long strips of improv sections with our choice of two vibrant colors. I used Kona Cerise and Peapod.

 

Ellyn Zinsmeister asked for improv log cabins in a set color palette which she set into buildings against a dark navy sky. I'll share about my blocks soon.

 

In March, I asked the group to make improv star blocks based on the traditional Sawtooth Star and featuring whatever improv styles and techniques the maker enjoyed. I love the variety of details in these blocks and look forward to putting them together once the last few arrive.

 

I really enjoy the fun and challenge of receiving a new prompt each month. This month I'll be making some improv letters. My wheels are spinning on what letter styles I will use.
