I have so many beautiful WIP projects that I'd love to see completed. Two-thirds of the top twelve were started in 2016. I've actually spent some time in the last year purging or repurposing some of my less loved WIPs. I will still be starting new projects this year, but I'm hoping to finish my twelve quilts listed here. (Oh, really thirteen... I put one "on deck" in case I do something crazy like completing a quilt before it's official month.)

This is my All People Quilt UFO Challenge list. It's the first year I'm participating and I look forward to making progress (and hopefully finishing) each of these quilts as I work on them throughout the year. The fun of the challenge is that you don't know in advance which quilt you'll be working on. On the first of the month, APQ let's us know which project number to work on. January's pick is #6. For me that is my Color Strata quilt from a class with Rob Appell last January. This was actually the first quilting class I ever took (after 14 years of quilting) and I love the bold color. I'm even more excited about the bright blue that will be added as the background. I finished sewing all my stratas in class. These are made from a full Kona jelly roll and cover most of a 4' x 8' design wall.

My next step is to decide what widths I'll be cutting these stratas into and playing on the design wall to decide how I'll piece the strips back together as well as the final layout of the quilt.

I've decided for 2017 I'll participate in One Monthly Goal with Elm Street Quilts. My friend Mary linked up in 2016 and I think the UFO Challenge will pair up nicely with One Monthly Goal. I have a hard time focusing on just one task and APQ is going to help out by telling me what to work on. ;-) That is not to say that I won't also be working on other things... I have two swaps due in February and play to finish two Project Quilting challenge quilts each month in January, February and March.

I'm participating in Cheryl's Meadow Mystery quilt along. By "participating" I've been mostly "watching everyone else make progress sewing for the past 3 1/2 months while I do nothing."

In September, when the first sewing instructions came out, I cut out all my fabric (only a month behind schedule). This week I finally sewed some of that fabric together. So far, I've finished the September, October, and November sewing steps. And I'm about a third of the way done with the December sewing. With any luck I'll finish those blocks up today and switch gears to a couple free motion quilting projects that I'd like to finish in the next week or so.

Meadow Mystery September by Sarah Goer Quilts

First, September's instructions were all about HSTs. I made 56 HSTs using the two-at-a-time method. 32 of them went together in these four colorful blocks and the other 24 (butterflies/white, not all shown) were awaiting further instruction. I'm so pleased with having chosen the Tula print for the variations in color it brings to the project. My last mystery quilt was scrappy for each set of fabric. This time I stuck to one fabric for each set, but this print brings a bit of that scrappy quality that I love.

Meadow Mystery October by Sarah Goer Quilts

October's instructions were to make all the hourglass and half hourglass blocks (52 total!). You can better see here that my white is actually a white on white print with small flowers.

Meadow Mystery November by Sarah Goer Quilts

November's instructions were to create the 16 flying geese and 16 square in a square units. I'm a little concerned that my square in a square units don't quite have a quarter inch seam allowance off all the points. Hopefully I don't lose too many points from my inner squares once these are pieced into larger units. I totally could have ripped out all my stitching before I trimmed them so that I could fix my seam allowance, but it seems this was one of those "done is better than perfect" moments. ;-)

Meadow Mystery December by Sarah Goer Quilts

Today I used a bunch of those units from September and October's sewing to start making these blocks. There are nine in all to make in December. I have three more to sew of each of the top blocks. I had all nine blocks up on the design wall and what stood out to me is that this quilt is going to be a lot of white. Perhaps that should have been apparent when there were 2 1/4 yards of my white fabric and 3 1/4 yards of my four other fabrics combined. But it didn't really hit me until today. I have never made a quilt with so much white fabric. That said, I'm excited to see it coming together. I'm eager to see what January holds for this project. It's feeling great to be nearly caught up. Note to self: start piecing the backing fabric. I think I'll use remnants of these fabrics and other purples.

In this time of year to reflect on what we have to be thankful for...

I'm thankful that my mom taught me to sew, so long ago that I don't even remember learning. I'm thankful that creativity was valued and cultivated in my childhood. I'm thankful that my quilting is something that helps me find balance in my life. I'm thankful that my kids share my love of quilting. (Photo above: I took them to see my friend Mel Beach's Challenge Yourself lecture and trunk show and my daughter enjoyed the fact that Mel used the same fabric in her mini quilt that R had used on the back of her own quilt.) I'm thankful for the countless quilters and artists who inspire me, both at my guilds and online through blogs and Instagram. I'm thankful for the individuals in the online quilting community who I'm able to connect with through blogging and Instagram.

In a month that has been very hectic for me, I am thankful for those few minutes when I can sneak away to the sewing machine. I've made the smallest of progress on this project which I hope to finish in time to submit to QuiltCon.
