Part of my commitment as an Island Batik Ambassador is to make a rep samples from pre-release lines of fabric. Back in July I received my second shipment of fabric and supplies for the year and my secret line of fabric was Fortune Teller. I love the vibrant colors as well as the dragonflies and butterflies! This is the fabric I'll be using for my January project so I thought I'd give you a sneak peek!

The rep samples are a quick and simple sew as they are made with squares and finished with the pillowcase binding method and simple quilting stitches. These 12" x 18" samples will travel with Island Batik reps to show off the fabrics and then are donated to be used as Kennel Quilts. I finished this one back in August when I couldn't show it to you yet. The Fortune Teller line was shared at Fall Quilt Market, so now I can show it off!

I look forward to getting started with this vibrant fabric for my January project!

I've made progress on two projects in the last week. I've already shown you my Waterfall strip sets. And here's the progress on my Island Batik Improv Tumbler. The rows are all pieced. The theme of this challenge is Whimsical and Wonky and I've definitely got the wonky going. Part of the nature of the planned improv in this piece is that the rows kind of do what they want to do. I can see two or three adjustments I'll definitely be making. I'd like the top row to be a little more straight to minimize fabric loss when I trim the top edge. That blue and purple strip that's making a right turn definitely needs some help. And the two pieces in the middle that look like they are kissing might get adjusting as well. I also have my half tumbler scraps to add to the ends of each row.

Another thought: This will be so fun to teach! Who wants to learn how to make your own Improv Tumbler?

This week the new project on the design wall is my Improv Tumbler that I'm making for my Island Batik Ambassador "Whimsical and Wonky" challenge this month. All of my fabrics are from the Paisley Dot Brights 10" stack (provided to me by Island Batik). I'm going for a color wash effect. I was able to get all of my whole tumblers onto the wall. I have a pile of half tumblers that I will use to fill in the ends of each row and perhaps piece together to fill in if needed. These improv tumblers were cut freehand with a rotary cutter, without the use of a ruler or template.

I look forward to starting to get this one sewn together. It's shown on a 48" wide design wall, so I expect it will shrink up up around 36" wide.

Edited to add: A little more on this project can be found in this earlier post. And it's based on my Improv Tumbler Mini (which I miss).
