Last Saturday I spent the day with Bay Area Modern Quilting for a fun day of Planned Improv. One of my favorite parts of teaching Planned Improv workshops is seeing the wide variety of projects that grow out of the same starting rules.

Here's just a glimpse of some of the beautiful work that was created on Saturday.

Some quilters stuck with solids. Rhonda used a monochromatic palette and Mary used a Tara Faughnan bundle of solids. Gerre opted for arranging her cool colored units to have a checkerboard center.

Sue opted for both uphill and downhill seams in some of her units.

Cyndi went home and finished her quilt top. I enjoy the little pops of turquoise sprinkled throughout. (I love it when quilters share their progress/finish pictures from home with me!)

I missed getting a picture of Alison's project up on the design wall, but look at the beautiful palette she chose.

We moved home (post remodel) and my sewing studio really needs some TLC. I'm in the middle of building my new cabinets to store all the things, but I took a break from building to haul one of my design walls upstairs so I could work on a project yesterday. I have two 4-foot by 8-foot insulation boards covered in batting. I don't have enough wall space to have these up in a permanent location, so I like the versatility of being able to move them around. Typically I have them blocking the closet. I digress...

In January at All-Star Review I sliced into some beautiful Cherrywood fabric for my Planned Improv: All About Angles demo. I love the color palette (Meadow 8-step bundle + Indigo) and I've been itching to get back to this one. I'm still adding to these units and building new ones, but I'm very pleased with where this is going. This section is about 4' wide. I'm tentatively aiming for about 80" square for the final quilt.

Earlier this month I was honored to be one of nine teachers presenting at the Northern California Quilt Council All-Star Review. This is the same organization that hosted the Northern California Meet the Teachers event I presented at last year.

All-Star Review fell the day after I taught in Tehachapi. It was a whirlwind week to go from teaching in the mountains of Southern California to multiple presentations the next day in Northern California. A fun, exciting whirlwind!

I had such a great time at All-Star Review. Each of nine teachers had a presentation space with room for attendees to sit for a demonstration. I shared my Planned Improv: All About Angles technique for seven 13-minute presentations. In case you've never given the same presentation many times in a row, about four presentations in I no longer knew what I'd said or what I hadn't said. It was reminiscent of Back to School night when I was teaching middle school and had to give my teacher spiel six times in a row.

Naturally I started a new project for the demonstration. I chose this beautiful bundle of Meadow from Cherrywood Fabric, plus yardage of Cherrywood Indigo.

The presentation was a chance for guild representatives to get a glimpse of my workshop and get to know my personality and presentation style. There was even time for a little Q&A during the presentation. Here's a peak at one of the units I put together during my demo. I look forward to pulling this project back out and working on it.
