I'm teaching my new workshop, Planned Improv: Scrappy Squares, twice in the next week. This Saturday I'll be teaching for Bay Area Modern and Tuesday I'm presenting at Quilting 101 with Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association. I'm so excited!

The technique for this workshop developed out of my work on the piece I made for the combination of the Greenery challenge and my guild square and rectangle scrap challenge, both of which concluded in May. I had two initial sketches, one of which developed into my Greenery quilt top, and the second of which was just pieced into this new 30" x 31" quilt top. I wanted to be able to share this variation at the workshop to show an alternative layout inspiration. This design is also different since I chose to use a single fabric for my background pieces. The possibilities are endless. ;-)

I taught middle school math for 11 years (and yearbook for 4 of those) before having kids. This Fall I'll be putting my teaching hat back on, but this time the content will be quilting workshops! I'm excited to debut my first workshop this Fall. Planned Improv: Scrappy Squares, featuring the technique I used to create my challenge quilt, Greenery.

My first two class samples show the diversity of the technique. Start with scraps you love and I'll lead you through designing your own improv layout and planning the construction to piece the puzzle you create.

 

The technique lends itself to a variety of quilting motifs. In my purple sample I chose an all over floral quilting motif, and in my blue sample I used each square to feature a straight line motif, with an all over free motion motif filling in the background of the quilt.

 

I'll be teaching Planned Improv: Scrappy Squares at Bay Area Modern in Palo Alto, CA on November 11. I will also be presenting a short demo of my technique at Quilting 101 for Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association in Saratoga, CA on November 14.

I took inspiration from my guild's square and rectangle scrap challenge to design this quilt. I began with a tiny thumbnail sketch and cut all of my green scraps into the largest squares I could. Then I used my design wall to plan the layout of my first slab and filled in around my squares. After the first slab I imposed some additional rules on myself to create similar, but not identical, slabs. This 61.5" x 66.5" quilt made a big dent in my green scraps and used up the majority of my neutral scraps. I'm submitting it for the Just the Top category of the Pantone Quilt Challenge hosted by Bryan House Quilts and No Hats in the house. You can see a bit more of my process in my original post.

I'll begin teaching this technique in workshops this Fall.
